Our History

Our hospital is a family-owned, non-profit organization, founded in 1981 by Dr. Antoine Chami, Dr. Khalil Germanos and Dr. Robert Germanos, with the mission of serving the community of Byblos and its surroundings.

The first hospital was built in 1965 on Frères Maristes Street.

In 1981, a new hospital was constructed along the main road facing the coastal highway.

Initially, the hospital consisted of 2 floors and included 30 beds. A renovation was carried out in 1992, adding a new wing, several medical departments and 3 additional floors.

The hospital is currently run by Dr. Joseph Chami and his family, carrying-on a long legacy of care and commitment to our community.

The Story Behind the Hospital’s Many Names

Originally named 'Hôpital Notre-Dame Maritime' in tribute to a nearby chapel by the sea named 'Notre-Dame Maritime' by the French, the hospital's name evolved with local usage. The local population began referring to it as 'Saydet Martine' in Arabic, which was later retranslated into French as 'Hôpital Sainte-Martine.' Additionally, locals often call it 'Chami Hospital' in honor of one of its founders, Dr. Antoine Chami. To preserve the historical and cultural significance of the name, the current owners chose to retain the original French name, 'Hôpital Notre-Dame Maritime.'

Dr. Antoine Chami was well-known in the region, not only for his medical expertise and charisma but also for his sense of humor. In fact, a collection of his best jokes was recently published by his friend and colleague, Dr. Wadih Abi Chebel.
